Together We CAN make a difference and this is how! A total of $5637 raised! Currently holding 4th place in Victoria!

💝 Still taking donations for the month of October: https://girlsnightin.cancervic.org.au/fundraisers/togetherwecantogetherwecan

Thank you to all the 75 sponsors for donated items, hampers and vouchers. Thank you to all the donations on the page and for people who came and supported the event on October 12!

So what is the good news about cancer?

So what is the good news here?
Thanks to advanced technology, research and the generosity of people, like all of you – with fundraisers like this - the rate of women dying from cancer is declining!
We also know more and can share more with others. Health screening is important. Knowing your body and seeing a health professional with any concerns or symptoms is important. We know the ways to reduce our risk of cancer – so remember these things and remind others, stop smoking, be sunsmart, exercise, move your body, eat healthy and reduce/eliminate alcohol. Take the time to prioritse you!
We know the 5-year survival rate for breast cancer has increased to 92% - from 73%.
This is due to research in prevention, early detection and new and improved breast
cancer treatments.

Since Australia’s National Cervical Screening Program was introduced in 1991, the rate of cervical cancer cases and deaths in Australian women has halved. Australia became the first country to roll out a national HPV vaccination program in 2007 – which now includes vaccinating young boys and girls. With this, Australia is set to be leading the way in eliminating cervical cancer as a public health issue in Australia by 2035!

Still taking donations for Cancer Council Victoria. Together We CAN make a difference!

Cervical cancer

Cervical cancer is one of the most preventable and treatable forms of cancer. Around 200 Victorians were diagnosed with cervical cancer in 2022.
Most people, 70% who develop cervical cancer in Australia are either overdue or have never had cervical screening test.
Regular Cervical Screening Tests are the best way to protect against cervical cancer.
Cervical Screening Tests are recommended for those aged 25-74 years.
This involves a collected sample every 5 years.
Self-test kits are now available. The sample is checked for HPV – a common infection that shows no obvious symptoms and causes cells to turn cancerous. HPV causes almost all cervical cancers.
Currently only around 69% of Victorian women and people with a cervix are up to date with Cervical Screening Tests. Please get screened.

Bowel cancer

Bowel cancer is the 4th most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia.
Bowel cancer is most common in people over 50 years, but it can occur at any age.
In 2022, 2,504 Victorians were diagnosed with bowel cancer. This included 1,690
females, which represents 48.2%.
If found early, more than 90% of cases can be successfully treated.
Bowel screening is recommended for those aged 45-74 years.
This involves a free home test kit every 2 years.
Regular bowel screening can be lifesaving.
However, screening participation in Victoria has decreased for the first time in many years, with only around 43% of eligible Victorians participating. Please get screened!

Sheree @ togetherWeCAN

Breast cancer

Breast cancer  is the most common new cancer in Victorian women.
Every day 58 people in Australia are diagnosed with breast cancer and 9 Australians will die from breast cancer every day. This includes males and females. That’s over 21,000 Australians this year.
1 in 7 women will be diagnosed with breast cancer in their lifetime.
More than 75% of breast cancers occur in women over 50.
That means 1000 women aged under 40 are diagnosed with breast cancer each year.
It is important as women we become familiar with the normal look and feel of our breasts. Most changes in the breast (in fact 9 out of 10) aren’t due to breast cancer. But if you do notice a change, it’s important to get checked by a doctor. Early detection of breast cancer means treatment has a much better chance of success.
Breast cancer screening is recommended for those aged 50-74 years.
This involves a free mammogram every 2 years.
Between 40-49 years, breast cancer rates are lower and testing is less effective, however you have a free breast screen if you are in this age group.
Regular mammograms can reduce your risk of breast cancer death by 25%.
However, only around 46% of eligible Victorian people participate in the breast screening program. Please get screened!

We are still taking donations

We are still taking donations!
To continue this cancer research, the Cancer Council says:
$20 ensures a person facing cancer can access support from a cancer nurse.
$25 can provide a wig to a woman experiencing cancer-related hair loss.
$50 can help book a short holiday break for a woman and her family to create
memories.
$100 enables the collection and processing of blood samples to help researchers learn
more about how cancer develops.
Thank you for helping us make a difference, together we CAN!

The event of 2024 is done!

Thank you to those who came and supported the Girls Night In Fundraiser for breast cancer awareness, raising funds for the Cancer Council supporting all womens cancers. The plan was to lift women up and bring womens cancers down. We united as women for a worthy cause and it was a fabulous evening with live music, food and drinks, a silent and live auction with some fabulously dressed auctioneers, health hub with resources, tribute wall, photobooth, live music, on site massages and physio advice and we had the opportunity for reflection during share time. We remembered those we have lost to cancer and celebrated our cancer survivors. We had 75 amazing and generous sponsors with something for everyone with items, hampers and vouchers! We had lucky door prizes which involved items, vouchers and more!

We raised more than the first event held in 2019, with a grand total of $5465.73 raised! If you’d like to contribute any amount for this cause you can still do so here:

A big thank you to all my helpers on the night - together we all made it happen!

Cancer sucks and the statistics show this! Every year, more than 35, 500 Victorians are diagnosed with cancer. The number of cases will increase as our population grows and ages. In Victoria, 32 people die from cancer every day! 46 is the number of women in Victoria that are diagnosed with cancer every day.

What is the good news here? Thanks to advanced technology, research and the generosity of people with fundraisers like this, the rate of women dying from cancer is declining!

Cancer patients need hope. Raising vital funds for the Cancer Council gives hope. Research gives power to scientists, medical teams, patients and their families. Together we CAN make a difference - so thank you for joining me on this journey for a second Girls Night In event - see you in another 5 years time!

In the meantime, if you’re eligible get screened for breast cancer, cervical cancer and bowel cancer. Know your body and be aware of any changes. If you do notice any changes - take action!

My parting advice - Love yourself enough to live a healthy lifestyle. Be happy with the beautiful things that make you, YOU. And live your best life!
Sheree xx

This fundraising event is in support and in memory of those affected by cancer

  • This fundraising event is in support and in memory of those affected by cancer, including people living with cancer, cancer survivors, carers and familes.
  • Monies raised will contribute to vital cancer research, prevention programs and support services.

Why participate? Too many reasons not to take part!

The cause is close to my heart as my Mum died of breast cancer when I was 15 years old.
As a registered nurse I see the short-term and long-terms effects of cancer and I want to make a difference.
We all know someone who has been impacted by cancer. Some are survivors, some are fighters and some have lost the battle to cancer.

I’m hosting a Girls’ Night In to help all Victorian women affected by cancer

Every year, 15,700 Victorian women are diagnosed cancer, and 6,000 of those will be breast or gynaecological cancers.

Thanks in part to generous Victorians, the good news is that the rate of women dying from cancer is declining. Throughout the last decade, the rate has been consistently decreasing by 1.5% per year. This is thanks to earlier detection of cancers through screening, reductions in tobacco use, and improvements in treatment.

I’m passionate about saving even more lives, so I'm helping Cancer Council Victoria by hosting a Girls’ Night In. It’s the perfect opportunity to catch up with the girls and celebrate our friendship while raising vital funds.

By supporting me, you’ll be funding ground-breaking cancer research, prevention programs and support services that offer a helping hand to all Victorian women affected by cancer.

Thank you to my supporters!
