Pinktober 2024

By Amanda Campbell

I’m hosting a Girls’ Night In to help all Victorian women affected by cancer

As many of you would know, my mum has had breast cancer twice. First in 2004 and then again in 2013. As a result of this second diagnosis, in 2014, I found out that like my mum, I carry the BRCA-2 gene.

A woman who tests positive for a BRCA mutation has an increased lifetime risk for breast and ovarian cancer and certain other cancers compared to women in the general population. With this gene mutation, my risk for cancer is 85%; it is, however, possible to have a BRCA mutation and never develop cancer.

In 2024,  I will once again be wearing pink every day in October.

This year, approximately 16,200 Victorian women will be diagnosed with cancer, and 6,000 of those will be breast or gynaecological cancers.

However, thanks to wonderful generosity like yours, the rate of women dying from cancer is declining. Since 1993, the rate has been consistently decreasing by 1.6% per year.

Thank you for your support!
